“It’s Wedding Season!”
Mike and I attended our first wedding for the year. Over the holiday weekend, we travelled to Cannon Beach for the wedding of my friend Arati to Kelly Terrall. While the weather wasn't as perfect as one would hope for their wedding day, it was a beautiful wedding nonetheless. We witnessed our first Hindu ceremony, and we heard Arati and Kelly exchange truly heartfelt vows in the American ceremony, which was officiated by Kelly's dad. All of this with a backdrop of Haystock Rock, followed by an evening a good food and lots of dancing, we had a blast! And I was happy to see some fellow CMUers whom I haven't seen in over 6 years. Congratulations Arati and Kelly!
A woman’s attitude is in her shoes
We saw it with Carrie in Sex in the City, and more recently with Toni Collette's Rose in In Her Shoes. Most women will tell you that her shoes are an important part of her outfit. I, personally, have planned what I was going to wear around a certain pair of shoes.
Last night, we went to see the new home of friends, Billy and Becky. Part of the tour included their walk-in closet, at which point, Billy points to what looks like 100 pair of Becky's shoes and asks me if I have just as many shoes. I promptly responded, "You'd have to ask Mike." So this morning, I just had to count to see how many shoes I really do have. Unless I have some hidden and forgotten pairs, I have 36 pairs of shoes: 13 heels, 9 flats, 11 sneakers, and 3 boots. I actually am starting to think this count is kind of low...
I finally decided to think about this a bit more than just a shrug of the shoulders. I always hear men try to figure out the "mystery" of women and their shoes as they watch women in their lives "hoarding" shoes. They immediately tag it as an obsession. Men, shoes do not merely serve the function of protecting our feet when we step outside our homes; they are also a constant and clear expression of our emotions. If we are wearing a pair of sneakers, we feel playful or adventurous. If we are wearing a sexy pair of high heels, it's because, we feel attractive and sexy and, dammit, we want you to take notice.
I grant you that there are probably a few extremes out there like Imelda Marcos (though, my favorite shoe place is appropriately named after her), but quite frankly, there is nothing wrong with a woman having a healthy pair of shoes. It's the same as having a variety of shirts from which to choose. Or underwear...and I don't hear men complaining about the millions of thongs sitting in a woman's lingerie drawer.
