Art space for kiddo

As a kid I loved coloring, painting, and drawing. I'd spend the afternoon at my desk or at the kitchen table doodling. I'd ask for pens at restaurants and draw on the backs of the paper placemats. I'm not alone. After seeing how much the kiddo gravitates towards creating things, I decided to set up a designated space for her in the house. I got tired of always having to clear the dining table just to eat a meal and finding crayons in everyone's bed, even Riley's.

Fortunately, we have a corner of our partially unfinished basement that is a perfect space for art. It has concrete floors, so I don't care if paint or whtever lands on it permenently. It's right next to the family room and play area, so I can keep an eye on her if I decide not to join in. And if things get too messy, the laundry room with utility sink is just right next door. With a bit of scrounging and Mike's help, I put all the pieces together last night. The kiddo hasn't seen it yet, but if she doesn't like it, I'll just use the space myself!

Update: I posted a few more pics online.

Latte Foam Art

Last week Mom was in town so we went out for breakfast with Eddie at Petite Provence. He ordered a latte, and when it came to table the foam was poured into a swan. I usually get a fleur de lis or a heart so I was quite impressed with the swan. Them Mike said that they have machines that can now do it for you. You punch in the design and out comes the foam. I think that takes all the art of it, but I'm curious as to how baristas feel about it.

More Greece photos

Last week Mike's stepmom Ann sent us a CD of the photos she took on our trip to Greece. Rather than going taking the time to integrate them into my online album, I thought that I would just post some of my favorites here.

Phantom calls

My parents moved to Beijing for their two-year assignment on Monday. That's not what this post is about, though. We had been talking about how we'd use Skype for our calling one another, and my dad just recently set up a new account.

This morning, around 4:40AM, the phone rings. I tried to answer it, but there was only dial tone. Not 5 minutes later, it rang again. I picked up, but all I could hear was background noise. No voice. Mike said that maybe it was my dad setting up Skype. It was definitely plausible...

About an hour later, the phone rang a third time. This time, Mike answered. I presume all he could hear was background noise, as well, because he just kept saying, "Hello? Speak up, I can't hear you!" Nothing. He *69ed the number, and haha, it wasn't my dad, after all. It was HIS dad making phantom calls with his Bluetooth headset picking up the voice dialing! Argh...technology and time zone differences just don't go hand-in-hand sometimes...

Congratulations to Katie and Jon…and Kevin and Irene!

Mike and I took a long weekend to fly to DC for, essentially, a Stout family reunion. His cousin Katie married Jon Sprick, who is an awesome guy with an awesome family (Shout out to Grant Sprick, who recently moved to Portland!) It was a bit more hot and humid than my comfort zone allowed, but it was a beautiful wedding, nonetheless. We personally congratulated Katie's brother Kevin and his wife Irene, who will be expecting twins this winter, and had an opportunity to see Don and Mary's new house, as well as my best friend from college, Joanna, and her husband! As always, I will put photos up on both this site and my Flickr page within the next day or two.
